You Hold Me and I’ll Hold you
new work by Emily Royer
In these uncertain times, a fear creeps in. Will we make it through, will our bonds survive, what would I do without you (or you)? Space becomes labyrinthine and disorienting, as though there are too many doors and stairs and windows opening to the unknown. What will we become?
What can we do? You hold me and I’ll hold you.
Royer’s work speaks to the immeasurable difference that can be made by sharing in and witnessing each other’s grief, by offering an ear or a hand when needed. The paintings in this series are symbolic vignettes using stories from her own life, but focusing on the universal aspects of these experiences. They depict moments of tenderness and mutual affection that can buoy us through life’s storms. They are an acceptance of the self and of life as it is, and a reminder that we can come through with tenderness.
This series of work depicts moments of respite. The individuals portrayed come together to gather strength before returning to the world. They make peace with their varied selves. Royer manipulates the shape and bend of her figures to make them feel simultaneously connected and isolated. They gaze off into space while their fingers or limbs reach out for one another. A group of women rest together as night turns to day, and take comfort in each other’s presence. Two lovers embrace as time reveals that they can trust the relationship they’ve built. Friends reignite each other’s belief that they can build their own futures.
