Tiger Strikes Asteroid Philadelphia (TSA Philadelphia) is pleased to announce an open call to our annual three-person exhibition, (re)FOCUS at Tiger Strikes Asteroid. This group exhibition will run from January 20, 2024, to February 24, 2024, and will be one of many exhibitions taking part in (re)FOCUS: Then and Now, a city-wide 50th-anniversary celebration of Philadelphia Focuses on Women in the Visual Arts/1974.

TSA Philadelphia invites visual artists to submit work for an opportunity to be featured in a curated exhibition that reimagines, questions, and/or explores themes centered around gender identity, representation and visibility, marginalization, social equality, self-determination, and/or empowerment.

Eligibility

Submissions are open to artists over 18, working in all mediums, WHO ARE NOT CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN A DEGREE-GRANTING PROGRAM.

Artists from historically under-recognized communities in the arts are encouraged to apply. Under-recognized communities may include those who identify as persons with disabilities, LGBTQ+, Indigenous/Native American/Native Alaskan, African American/Black, Chicano, Latino/a/X, Asian American and Pacific Islander, women, marginalized immigrant communities, artists with non-traditional art education backgrounds.

Artists living outside of Philadelphia are welcome to apply but will be responsible for artwork shipping costs.

At least one of the three artists to be included in this exhibition will be local to the Philadelphia area.
Submission Guidelines

The submission fee is $25.00 for up to five images and is non-refundable. TSA Philadelphia can waive the entry fee on a case-by-case basis. Please consider that these entry fees directly support our operational and administrative costs before requesting a waiver.

All submissions must be in by 11:59 PM on December 20, 2023 for consideration.

Artists who wish to apply as a group (artworks created by individual artists but shown together) should submit separate applications, with a note in their artist statements. Each artist will also be considered independently unless they specify otherwise in their application.

Artists who work as a collaborative team (all artworks created together without individual credits) may apply under a single application.

Selected artists will be notified by January 3, 2024.
Selection Criteria and Acceptance Guidelines

Tiger Strikes Asteroid is firmly committed to inviting artists from a wide range of perspectives, art practices, and backgrounds.

Artists who are invited to participate in this exhibition are selected by current members of TSA Philadelphia. Our selection process includes checking artist eligibility, considering the feasibility of an artwork installation, reviewing artist statements, and determining which artworks best fulfill the themes of the exhibition.

Selected artists will receive a $150 stipend (with submission of receipts) for shipping or other costs associated with the exhibition.

Professional photographic documentation
Professional photographic documentation of the exhibition will also be provided.

All artwork submitted must be ready to hang or install.

Artists are responsible for the delivery of their work. TSA cannot transport work to the gallery.

Work must be received by January 13, 2024. If hand delivery is not possible the artist is responsible for the cost of shipping or mailing artwork to and from Tiger Strikes Asteroid using FedEx, UPS, or USPS. A return shipping label and return postage must be included with the artwork.

Artist reception: February 9, 2024, 6-9 PM

Tiger Strikes Asteroid retains a 30% commission on all art sales made during the exhibition.

Work must be picked up and de-installed by February 26, 2024.
